Music has always been more than just a collection of notes
and rhythms; it’s an experience for the mind, body, and soul. Today, I invite
you on a journey to discover Spirit Winds, a new project dedicated to providing
musical sanctuary and inspiration. Whether you’re looking to escape, reflect,
or simply enjoy fresh sounds, Spirit Winds will help with that my friends.
Roots and Inspiration: The Early Days
My fascination with this genre began in the vibrant era of
the 1980s, a time when “new age” music flourished. The scene was alive with
world instruments, harps, guitars, flutes, duduks, and dynamic percussion, layered
with the magic of synthesizers. I was drawn to this blend, feeling a special
connection to the way synths could transform traditional sounds and create new
landscapes. This inspiration fueled my ambition to integrate these elements
into my own compositions and set the stage for what would eventually become
Spirit Winds.
Technical Evolution: Synths, Computers, and the Birth of Two Channels
In 1984, everything changed for me. I connected a Siel
DK600, an Italian synthesizer, to a Commodore 64 computer using MIDI
technology. This innovative setup opened a world of creative possibilities, and
from these roots, both Taos Winds and Spirit Winds were born. The process was
experimental and exciting, allowing me to explore new sonic territories and
develop distinctive musical identities for each project.
Project Expansion: Archives, Genres, and Distinctions
Over the years, I worked on various projects, including Taos
Winds, which many of you may already know. However, as time went on, I composed
music that didn’t quite fit the Taos Winds genre. These pieces found themselves
accumulating in vast archives, each year adding more depth to the Spirit Winds
collection. This separation allowed for creative freedom, helping Spirit Winds
develop its unique character while preserving the spirit of experimentation.
Moment of Realization: Sharing Spirit Winds with the World
Not long ago, I revisited one of the older Spirit Winds
tracks and had a sudden realization: why was I keeping this music to myself?
Why didn’t it have a channel of its own? That “aha” moment spurred me into
action, and I decided it was time to share the treasure trove of Spirit Winds
compositions with a wider audience. Thus, the Spirit Winds channel/project was
born, dedicated to music that provides repose and inspiration for all who
listen.
A New Day Begins
The first piece to emerge from the archives is aptly titled
“A New Day.” This track embodies the fresh beginnings and creative energy that
Spirit Winds represents. I’m thrilled to share this music and invite you to
join me, to experience the journey as it unfolds.
